Poultry products: PPA for price control mechanism

Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) here on Friday stressed the need for determining the price control mechanism for poultry products in order to control any undue hike in its rates. "There is no force but few whole-sellers in the market, who determine the poultry prices of their own in the twins cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi."

"A few people are determining the poultry products prices in the market, which is against the consumers rights and new price control mechanism to facilitate the people is need of hour", Chairman Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) Dr Hassan Sarosh told APP here on Friday.

He said that the recent hike in poultry products prices was temporary and it would gradually come down by -mid of January 2015 and demand and supply situation becomes balanced.

Dr Hassan said that the prices of poultry products have increased in the twin cities and the price of live chicken in the retail market has reached Rs 170 per kilo and same as eggs in Rs 118 per dozen.

He said that due to cold weather conditions in Northern part of the country, most of the farmers closed down their poultry farms, which resulted in shortage of the product, adding that due to less supply and more demand the prices went up. He added that the winter season started and due to recent cold waves resulted in high demand of the eggs. Chairman PPA said marriage seasons and Christmas also contributed in the hike of poultry products.

Meanwhile Secretary General, PPA Dr Bashir Mehmood said that because of the bad market situation, poultry chickens prices increased in capital cities and demand and supply problem is also cause of high prices. He said that current energy crises in the country was also cause of less production, adding the increase in prices of poultry feeds and medicines also effected the chicken rate in last couple of weeks.
