BORONGAN CITY, Eastern Samar, June 9 (PIA) --
Provincial Agriculturist Regalado Opena is optimistic that with the
demonstration farm being cultivated by his office and with the new farm machineries
gven by the Department of Agriculture (DA), this city would be able to produce
their own fruits and vegetables and be food sufficient by 2015.
Opena said that the demo farm showcases integrated farming that in July, he expects to harvest corn, peanuts, water melon, cabbages, lettuce, and more.
According to him, most of his staff are out in the fields assisting farmers or teaching them, hands-on, on modern farming.
He said that the latest mechanical assistance given by the DA inspires them and the farmers to till the soils harder. He said that the four-wheel drive tractor is truly a big help to them in addition to the Rotary Cultivator.
A Rotary Cultivator is a machine which prepares the soil where a seedling will be planted and it makes planting easier.
“There is no need for the farmer to dig a hole, because the Rotary Cultivator does it faster," the OPAS Chief said. “It is a big relief to the farmer,” he said.
Opena pointed out that farm animals, carabaos in particular, are dwindling in number, thus the need for more farm machineries such as these two, that DA gave to the province.
However, he said that OPAS, could offer a hand tractor costing approximately P100,000 that can be borrowed from them which is payable in a year time or two-cropping seasons. (EOPT/AEN-PIA,8, Eastern Samar)
