Colombo: Sri Lankan President's Advisor on
Agriculture Development Hemakumara Nanayakkara has resigned from his post over
some issues in the agrarian sector.
According to local media, the presidential
advisor, who has been in the post for one year, has been dissatisfied with
government's plans to build a domestic airport in a land that belongs to the
Kundasale Agriculture College at Kandy in the Central Province.
However, the Minister of Agriculture Mahinda
Yapa Abeywardena has told the parliament yesterday that the government has not
decided to take the College's land to build the domestic airport.
Nanayakkara, who is the younger brother of
Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara and known for his outspoken nature, has said that
his decision to resign was based on several issues arose in the sector lately,
not just the airport issue.
Hemakumara Nanayakkara, who retired from
active politics in February 2010, was a former parliamentarian form Galle
district and former Deputy Minister of Agriculture. He contested from the
United National Party and later crossed over to the ruling party, United
People's Freedom Alliance in 2010.
