Kufuor neglected agriculture - Report

The UN Africa Human Development index has cited the NPP administration for placing priority on the military in terms of budgetary spending to the neglect of agriculture: the sector driving the Ghanaian economy.

According to the report, cumulative budgetary spending between 2000 and 2008 show almost twice as much spending on the military compared to agric particularly in the area of research and sector development.

But overall, Ghana performed fairly well on the Human Development index for 2012.

However, the New Patriotic Party is questioning the UN report.

In an interview with Joy News, Policy Advisor to the NPP, Kwaku Kwarteng insisted the report raises more questions than answers.

“This goes for not just Ghana but all the countries surveyed except Mauritius: just one country where you have research in agriculture taking more than military - just Mauritius. In any case if you go to the SIPRI source, you realise that in Ghana between 2009 and now it is the same thing.”

Meanwhile, there are only nine Africa countries mentioned in the report for achieving significant measure of human development and Ghana is one of them, in addition, Ghana is also the only sub Saharan African country set to achieve the MDG on halving poverty by 2015.

Head of the Centre for Policy Analysis, Dr. Joe Abbey says government must translate the achievement into real job creation to have the desired impact.
