Agriculture Minister Suswono said on Thursday he welcomed the move by the country’s top antigraft body to investigate his ministry in connection with a bribery case that has implicated a top Islamic politician.
Suswono said he would facilitate the Corruption Eradication Commission’s (KPK) investigation and would not block access to any data it needed, even though speculation is rife that the minister, himself, is linked to the case.
“When the KPK moves to investigate something, I believe its investigators already have some basic evidence. I hope the commission can carry out the investigation as soon as possible,” Suswono told the press at his office.
He added that he would not resist any moves by the KPK. “I totally support the KPK. I even hope that investigators could uncover this case as openly as possible,” Suswono, also a senior Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) politician, said.
The KPK detained four individuals, including PKS chairman Luthfi Hasan Ishaaq, after investigators caught the three other suspects in the act of handing over money, alleged to be bribes.
The KPK confiscated Rp 1 billion (US$103,000) in cash from the back of a car belonging to Ahmad Fathanah, one of the suspects, which was allegedly given by two other suspects, Juardi Efendi and Arya Abdi Effendi, later identified as directors of the meat importing company PT Indoguna Utama.
