UNCTAD study on Mexican agriculture and trade presented to Government

Ambassador Juan José Gómez Camacho, Permanent Representative of Mexico to the United Nations Office in Geneva and other international organizations, led a five-person delegation that received the report, “Mexico’s Agriculture Development: Perspective and Outlook,” at a meeting with Mr. Supachai today.

The study was carried out in response to a request from Mexico’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA). It was undertaken by UNCTAD’s Division on International Trade in Goods and Services, and Commodities, and by the UNCTAD's Special Unit on Commodities.

The work was supported by the Permanent Mission of Mexico to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, and SAGARPA, with special involvement of the Agrifood and Fishery Information Service (SIAP) and of the Mexican Ministry of Energy (SENER). Many interviews with stakeholders within Mexico’s agricultural sector, including producers, Government agencies, and universities were carried out in the course of research for the study.

The farming sector employs nearly 6 million people in Mexico. Agricultural exports from the country totaled some US$17 million in 2010.

Other members of the Mexican delegation were Enrique Domíngez Lucero, Minister for Agriculture Affairs of the Permanent Mission of Mexico to the United Nations Office at Geneva; Judith Arrieta, Counselor for Economic Affairs at the Mission; Victoria Romero, First Secretary and UNCTAD Coordinator at the Mission; and Dante Licona, Press and Information Officer at the Mission.
