Area agriculture and environmental officials
checked out the latest in agricultural plastic recycling Friday morning at the
Burgett Farm in Tully.
They got to see how the plastic used as fruit
and vegetable row covers, bale wraps or bunk silo covers on dairy farms or
greenhouse covers can be put into a machine to condense it into a plastic bale.
The recycled plastic often is used to make wheel chocks, highway guardrail
posts or non-concrete sidewalks.
Finding ways to recycle these plastics has
been imperative since October 2009, when the state made it illegal to burn
waste plastics in open fires on farms or anywhere else in the state.
Mark Burger, executive director of the
Onondaga County Soil and Water Conservation District, who sponsored Friday’s
demonstration, said there are no current recycling opportunities available in
Onondaga County for ag plastics. The Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency,
Cornell University and the Onondaga County Soil and Water are working to
establishment some small scale recycling pilot projects to help move this
recycling initiative forward.
USAg Recycling, a Texas company, comes to New
York state once a year to provide free recycling services. Go to this
website for more information or call (800) 654-3145.
