Ministry of Agriculture of the People's Republic o : China plants more than 80% ...

As of May 20th, Chinese farmers have planted about 1.107 billion mu (73.8 million hectares) of spring crops, or 82.5% of the total planting area, 2.1 percentage points lower than a year ago, released by the Ministry.

The progress of planting varies by crops. In terms of grain, China has planted 766 million mu (51.067 million hectares), completing 81.3% of the total planned planting areas. In terms of oil-bearing crops, China has planted 68.44 million mu (4.56 million hectares), 66.3% of the total planned planting areas. In terms of cotton and sugar crops, the planting is drawing to an end for the former and has completed for the latter.

Generally, spring planting in main growing area is now back on schedule, after being delayed for almost two weeks in the northeastern provinces due to excessive rain and snow.

Despite of all the low temperature, serious water-logging in Northeast China and persistent drought in Southwest and Northwest China in last spring, MOA responded to the tough farming conditions with following measures:

1. Proper prior planning. On the second workday after Chinese Spring Festival, MOA held a video conference on spring planting to make specific arrangements. Agricultural departments at all levels were mobilized to call on all available rural labors and make detailed plans to secure spring sowing.

2. Differentiated strategies by regions. In light with adverse climate in different regions, MOA launched campaigns against water-logging in Northeast China, against drought in Southwest and Northwest China and on intensive nursery of rice seedlings in middle & lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

3. Coordinated operation of farming machines.Local authorities were urged to intensify coordination in mechanized operation. More farm machines were put into use to speed up land preparation and sowing, particularly in Heilongjiang Province.

4. Intensified supervision and technical service.MOA fielded ten supervision teams or technical teams consecutively to help local farmers manage spring planting and provide technical service to farmers.
