To the Editor:
To Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney:
This letter is to commend the foresight that you and the county Legislature have demonstrated by creating the Agricultural Council. The Onondaga County Soil and Water Conservation District and its board of directors believe this commitment on your part will greatly help to promote the agricultural producers in Onondaga County by raising community awareness of the food products which are produced locally. The Council will also provide residents with a better understanding of how food is grown within the county.
The work of the Council will help keep farmers on the land, and the open space that contributes to the beauty and the economy of our community will be protected from development; hence, farmland preservation. Also, agriculture is not a drain on local government resources, since livestock and cropland do not require expensive services such as busing, schools and other types of municipal infrastructure.
Please know that the District is proud to be a member of the Agricultural Council. We look forward to working with the membership to support and promote their goals.
