Government has stepped up plans to increase livestock production through investment in genetic improvement.Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Cabinet Secretary, Mr Felix Kosgey said shortage of disease resistant breeds, which produce more milk is a hindrance to the development of the livestocksub-sector.
“We want to create more forums where farmers can access information on cattle breeds, feed production and animal husbandry practices to increase the contribution of livestock to the national GDP, currently standing at 12 per cent,” Kosgey said.
He was speaking at his Kilimo House office after receiving a Sh35 million sponsorship cheque from John Gethi, Brookside Dairy general manager in charge of milk procurement and extension services. The money will go towards this year’s Livestock Breeders Show and Sale to be held on June 26 – 28. Kosgey said his ministry had finalised plans to establish disease-free zones in all counties. This, he observed, will ensure livestockproducts attract better prices in the international market.
Kosgey said the State encourages private sector participation in the realisation of its development agenda. He said his ministry would work with County Governments to rejuvenate extension services at the grass roots.
Gethi said the show, to be held at Jamhuri Park, would provide farmers with an opportunity to witness technological advancement in the local livestock industry, including modern breeding methods like embryo transfer.
“So far, Brookside has spent in excess of Sh145 million to stage the show. We are encouraged by the results as our farmers embrace more productive methods while managing their livestock,” Gethi said.
He said the Company will sponsor 20 farmers for an educational tour of Israel.
