Agriculture chief is highest-paid Cabinet member in 2012

Agriculture chief Proceso Alcala was the highest-paid member of President Benigno Aquino III's Cabinet last year, the Commission on Audit (COA)'s Report of Salaries and Allowances showed.

COA records revealed that Alcala received P6.037 million in salaries, allowances and bonuses in 2012. The bulk of this amount came from Alcala's salary as agriculture secretary, which was pegged at P2.515 million.

On top of his salary, Alcala received a P2.119-million allowance for sitting as the National Food Authority's council chairman. The agriculture chief also got P341,000 in allowances; P267,729 in bonuses, incentives and benefits; P729,999 in discretionary expenses and P60,000 in additional compensation.

Foreign Affairs chief Albert del Rosario, the wealthiest Cabinet official last year, meanwhile earned P4.355 million for his government post in 2012, making him the second highest-paid member of Aquino's Cabinet.

Health Secretary Enrique Ona came in third with P2.433 million, followed by Science and Technology chief Mario Montejo, who earned P2.125 million as a Cabinet official last year.

National Commission on Muslim Filipinos chairman Mehol Sadain, on the other hand, was the lowest-paid Cabinet official who served a full term last year, earning P1,280,424 in 2012.
