Haiti - Agriculture : $358.000 for the irrigation of the plain of Gonaïves

The Embassy of Japan and representatives of three organizations departments of Artibonite and of Centre : the "Fédération des Planteurs Irrigants de la Plaine de Gonaïves" (FEPIPGO), the "Association des irrigants de la Zone 4" (AIZ4), and the Technical School of Agriculture of Sainte-Thérèse de Papaye, have signed this week three grant agreements totaling just over $358.000.

This assistance from Japan, fall within the framework of the "Assistance in the form of donations to local microprojects" (APL) and will allow : the rehabilitation of the irrigation system Bongris (Gonaïves) [$123,126] ; the reconstruction of the water catchment of Sainte-Cécile (Gonaïves) [$122.973] and the installation of an irrigation system on the farm of the Technical School of Agriculture of Sainte-Thérèse de Papaye (Hinche) [$112,125]

These 3 projects, once completed, will allow the irrigation of 603 hectares of agricultural land in the plain of Gonaïves.

Kenji Kuratomi, Chargé d'affaires ai of the Embassy of Japan, invited the beneficiaries to ensure the proper management of these funds, and expressed hope that the structures rehabilitated and installed, are maintained regularly.

Japan extends grants for roads and agriculture

GOVERNMENTS of Japan and Tanzania has signed the Exchange of Notes concerning three Japanese grant aid projects amounting to Japanese Yen 1.552 billion (approx 27.7 b/-). 

Finance Minister, Dr William Mgimwa told journalists that under the expansion of Kilwa Road and Harbour Road intersection at Gerezani area a total of 20 bn/- will be spent, while 6.92bn/- will be used for improvement of TAZARA intersection road. 

He said that the government of Japan has allocated about 6.8bn/- for a food security project for underprivileged farmers known as 2KR to be implemented by Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperatives. In his speech, Dr William Mgimwa thanked the government of Japan and said that it has been a key economic partner to Tanzania’s Social Economic Development for many decades. 

“I am happy to note that, the Exchange of Notes on these projects will bring significant impact to infrastructure improvement in Dar es Salaam and it will increase the average travelling speed at peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when people commute to work or school, from the current 0.7 km per hour, to 40km per hour,” said Mr Masaki Okada, the Ambassador of Japan to Tanzania. 

Mr Okada said that the new Exchange of Notes is expected to be signed for the construction of flyovers at the TAZARA crossroads which will alleviate traffic jams in the City. He noted that the construction of double lane flyovers with walkways and service roads will cut the time used for travelling between the city centre and Julius Nyerere International Airport, a distance of 11 kilometres. 

Under the food security for underprivileged farmers project, Mr Masaki said that the project supply agriculture inputs identified by the Tanzanian Government for the improvement of agricultural conditions in Tanzania. “Tanzania has been enjoying a relatively high food self-sufficiency ratio in recent years, its food security has not yet been fully attained due to irregular rainfalls and insufficient transportation infrastructure,” he explained. 

According to Mr Yukihide Katsuta, the chief Representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency(JICA, he said the project for improvement of transport capacity in Dar es Salaam will be for widening a 1.3km stretch in Gerezani area roads which connect Kamata junction and Kilwa Road. He said that JICA will enhance coordinating mechanism among transport related organizations namely, Ministries, LGAs, TANROADS, Traffic Police and others.

Global consumption outpacing population growth

Meat: It's something that people around the world take for granted--but maybe not for much longer.

Demand for meat is increasing worldwide. One reason is the burgeoning global population, which is forecast to reach 9.3 billion in 2050.

But that is not the only factor.

As per capita income increases in line with economic development, lifestyles and eating habits also change.

There are more people living in cities, and the spread of the food service industry, including fast food chains, has led to more regular consumption of meat.

Looking back on the period from 1961 to today, the world's population has more than doubled from around 3 billion to 7 billion, while the volume of meat consumed annually has quadrupled from 70 million tons to just under 300 million tons. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization asserts that the production of food, including meat, must be increased by 60 percent by 2050 in order to meet the dietary needs of the planet's human population.

At present, the world's consumption of meat is divided among pork, poultry and beef at a ratio of 4-3-2, and demand is growing at the most rapid rate for poultry. It offers the greatest efficiency in terms of weight gain of livestock with regards to the amount of feed given, and the shortest breeding time.

Raising livestock requires vast amounts of grains for food. For example, it is said to take 11 kilograms of grain feed to produce 1 kilogram of beef, compared to 7 kilograms for pork and 4 kilograms for poultry. In the future, the degree to which meat production can be increased will be directly linked to the degree to which the production of corn and other basic ingredients used to make livestock feed can be increased.



REGIONAL EATING HABITS



What kinds of meat are the most popular in different countries around the world? By creating a "meat map" based on FAO data on 170 countries, we can gain a glimpse of eating habits in various nations.

According to statistics from 2009, global meat consumption can be ranked in the following order: pork, poultry, beef and mutton.

Pork consumption is particularly prominent in Europe. Pigs are valued so much that it is said, "the only thing worth throwing away is their oinking." Ham and pork-based sausages are thought to have originated in Europe. Five European countries have the greatest annual per capita consumption of pork in the world: Austria tops the list at 65.6 kilograms, followed by Germany, Lithuania, Poland and Spain.

After Europe, the next greatest eaters of pork are found in Asia. Pigs have long been highly regarded in Eastern Asia, where their dung is used as an agricultural fertilizer. There are also countries with Islamic populations, such as Malaysia and Indonesia, where poultry occupies a more central position than pork in the national diet.

Islam views pigs as impure beasts and the consumption of pork is zero in Northern African nations and the Middle East, with the exception of Israel and Lebanon. In contrast, poultry is popular. This is also the case in Central and South America, apart from beef-producing powerhouses such as Brazil and Argentina. The United States, however, is rather surprising. Despite its image as a beef-loving country, the quantity of poultry Americans consumes is actually greater.

According to figures from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, with regard to poultry, the volume of chicken consumed globally rose 37 percent in the 10 years from 2002. In the same period, pork consumption only increased by 15 percent and beef by 3 percent, making the growing popularity of chicken all the more remarkable.

So then, in which countries is beef the most favored?

Some obvious examples are former Soviet nations with vast pastures, such as Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Argentina boasts the world's largest per capita consumption of beef at 54 kilograms. It is not uncommon for an adult Argentine male to tuck away 500 grams of meat in a single sitting.

Even so, global consumption of beef peaked in 2007, and has continued to trend downward in recent years. This is particularly pronounced in developed nations such as the United States, France and Australia. In Russia, the most popular meat shifted from beef to poultry over a 10-year period through to 2009. The same applies to China, where beef consumption peaked in 2008, and has continued to decline in the past few years.

"Worsening economic conditions have fostered a frugal mind-set, and consumers are beginning to turn to cheap meats," says Nourinchukin Research Institute chief researcher Akihiko Hirasawa. "Coupled with greater health consciousness, there is a progressive shift toward poultry because of its low fat content."

Nevertheless, the FAO sees this as a temporary decline. Beef consumption is expanding primarily in developing countries at a greater pace than it is declining in developed nations, and the FAO predicts that it will rise to around 73 million tons in the year 2020, a 15 percent increase compared to the 2009 figure.

Mutton is most popular in countries where nomadic tribes live, such as Mongolia, Tajikisan and Syria. In Mongolia, famous for its barbecue, mutton consumption per capita is 49 kilograms, which puts it far ahead of the rest of the world.

JAPAN'S MOST POPULAR MEATS

Chinese-style steamed buns filled with minced pork are called "nikuman" (meat buns) in the greater Tokyo area, and "butaman" (pork buns) in the western Kansai region. This is because the word "meat" was traditionally associated with beef in the western Kansai area.

Looking at a regional breakdown of the volume of beef purchased per household according to a 2011 survey by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of family income and expenditures, the Kinki region came on top with 9.7 kilograms, followed by the Chugoku, Kyushu, Shikoku, and Okinawa regions. In the Kanto region, the figure was only 5.8 kilograms.

This difference in consumption is said to be related to agricultural culture.

It was only during the Meiji Period (1868-1912) when Western culture entered Japan that cattle traditionally used for plowing and conveyance were slaughtered for meat.

"Eastern Japan had large tracts of cultivated land, and fast horses were regarded as ideal for farming," says Akira Miyazaki, president of Kyoto College of Arts and Crafts and a beef culture expert. "In western Japan where arable land was in shorter supply, the most common livestock was cattle. Perhaps the custom of consuming them when the animals get older still has an influence today."

Pork is more popular in eastern Japan than in western Japan. Records show that numerous pig farms already existed in the greater Tokyo area in the Meiji Period. The amount of pork purchased per household west of the Tokai region is around 14 to 18 kilograms, whereas it exceeds 20 kilograms in the Hokuriku, Kanto, Tohoku and Hokkaido regions.

Even national totals suggest that the most familiar meat on Japanese dinner tables is pork. It comprises around 50 percent of all meat purchased in Japan annually, followed by poultry at 30 percent, while beef accounts for 20 percent.

Pork consumption already exceeds that of beef in western Japan.

Looking at data from Japan's prefectural capitals, apart from Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki, Yamaguchi, and Tokushima where poultry is king, pork is the most consumed meat in the remaining 42 prefectures.

However, for a time after World War II, beef was the most common meat in Japan. With the invention of the tractor and improvements in chemical fertilizers, cattle that were once used to cultivate land were sold for human consumption and beef became cheaper than pork and poultry. After this trend ran its course, the price of beef began to rise, and in 1965 purchases of pork exceeded those of beef. Two years later, it switched places with poultry and became the third most purchased meat.

Even so, when looking at consumer spending on meat on a value basis, there are many prefectures in western Japan where beef occupies the top position, which represents a distinct difference with eastern Japan where expenditure on pork is greater.

The only exception in eastern Japan is Yamagata Prefecture. The northern Japanese folk dish of "imoni" (thick potato and meat soup) is flavored with miso and contains pork in prefectures such as Miyagi and Fukushima, but the version found in Yamagata mostly uses beef and soy sauce, similar to sukiyaki.

Community Supported Agriculture makes inroads into China

BEIJING: The concept of Community Supported Agriculture is an alternative, locally-based socio-economic model of agriculture and food production.
Popular in Europe, Japan and the United States, the concept is now making preliminary inroads into China.
In a village northwest of Beijing, "farmers" are city dwellers who come during the weekends.
For about US$240 a year, urbanites get small plots of land to farm and grow their favorite produce.
Liu Mingyi, an urbanite farmer, said: "I grow maize, cherry tomatoes, bittergourds, tomatoes, scallions, brinjal, and two types of cucumbers."
Shi Huiyan, another urbanite farmer, said: "We grow cabbage, cauliflower, and we've already harvested celery, Chinese cabbage and spinach several times. With this small plot of land we don't have to buy any vegetables the entire summer." 
 Set up in 2009, Little Donkey Farm is China's first Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm.
 CSA began in the early 1960s in Germany and Switzerland due to concerns about food safety and the urbanisation of agricultural land.
 The result is a partnership between farmers and consumers to ensure safe organic produce and an ecologically-sound environment.
 Huang Zhiyou, assistant general manager, Little Donkey Farm, said: "Consumers pay us in advance which means that we don't have to take up loans. This also benefits farmers. 
 "In the past, they worked hard for months only to discover that when they try to sell their produce, the prices were subjected to great fluctuations. In this way, consumers are like our shareholders who pre-invest in us."
 In a country where food safety has often been a major cause for concern, the growing popularity of Community Supported Agriculture hardly comes as a surprise. 
 It is also an indication that a growing number of Chinese are willing to pay higher prices for food that they feel they can really trust.
 For an annual fee, the farm also delivers fresh organic vegetables to the doorsteps of urban consumers.

There are currently at least three dozen, possibly up to a hundred, CSA farms in China.
For urbanites-turned-farmers, the attraction isn't just the chance to bring home fresh produce.
 Xu Zhiyong, an urbanite farmer, said: "When I work I'm exposed to the sun. It's mainly a form of relaxation to me. I don't care about the end result as much as the process. To tell the truth, it's cheaper for me to buy than to grow my own."
 For others, it is the opportunity to expose urban children to nature.
 However, there are difficulties in implementing CSA in China.
 Huang Zhiyou, assistant general manager, Little Donkey Farm, said: "China has different land policies. It's not like western countries where land can be privatised, and farmers have rights over their land, and are free to decide what to do with the land. 
 "Things are less stable in China. Who owns the land? Is it the village? Is it the government? It's hard to say."
 While the CSA concept may not fully address the country's food safety problems, they do provide yet another alternative for more discerning consumers.

Japanese Government to promote agriculture development in northern Ghana


The Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. Naoto Nikai, on Wednesday in Tamale gave the assurance that the Japanese Government would support small scale farming in the Northern part of Ghana, to increase agricultural production.

He also announced more educational scholarship packages at the undergraduate and post-graduate level for Ghanaians.

Mr. Nikai asked interested students to avail themselves of the opportunity, and said that Japan would continue to exchange research and educational experiences with Ghana.

He announced these when he paid a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor of the University of Development Studies (UDS), staff and Deans of the various faculties, to interact and share ideas for mutual benefits.

The visit was also to strengthen the existing research relation with the UDS and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and find out areas of further collaboration and support.

Mr. Nikai said past students, who had benefited from the Japanese scholarships had good relations in that country and kept good contact that makes further extension to be easy and possible.

The Ambassador said Japan was much aware of the numerous challenges facing the Northern part of the country and assured that most of its development assistance to Ghana would target the Northern part of the country and mentioned the Upper West as the region to benefit most.

He said as part of the G8 summit, Japan would soon roll out a five-year climate change adaptation programme to reduce the devastating effect of climate change in Northern Ghana, to increase crop yield for the small scale farmer adding that “Japan will help increase rice production for the small scale farmer”.

Professor David Millar, the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the UDS, expressed worry about the increasing international ideology of Ghana about the establishment of large scale plantations as a way of reducing poverty.

He said when more resources were made available to the large scale farmer, it would deprive the small scale farmer of inputs.

Prof. Millar appealed to the international community to assist small scale farmers.**

Seafood exports net $2b in 5 months


HA NOI — Seafood exports in the first five months of the year reached US$2.3 billion, an increase of 9.8 per cent over the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. In May alone, seafood exports fetched US$500 million.
Shrimp had taken first place in export value among Viet Nam's key seafood export products, the ministry said, noting that surges in shrimp export value were recorded in the key markets of Japan and the US.
Shrimp exports to Asia have developed strongly in recent years. Japan is the leading importer of Vietnamese shrimp, accounting for 26 per cent of the nation's total shrimp export value.
Viet Nam Association of Seafood Producers and Exporter (VASEP) vice chairwoman Nguyen Thi Thu Sac said that demand for shrimp in the EU had fallen in the wake of the eurozone debt crisis and in the face of increasingly strict food hygiene and safety requirements. — VNS

Japan Assists Sub Saharan Africa To Develop New Rice Varieties


The African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) has signed a license agreement with Japan Tobacco (JT) for access to technologies that will address rice productivity constraints affecting smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The agreement involves the application of JT’s transformation technology to develop new rice varieties for use by smallholder farmers in Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda.
The initiative, known as the Nitrogen Use Efficient Water Use Efficient and Salt Tolerant (NEWEST) Rice Project, seeks to address some of the major constraints that face rice production in SSA.
The goal of the project is to develop and disseminate farmer preferred and locally adapted rice varieties with enhanced nitrogen-use efficiency, water-use efficiency and salt tolerance. JT will offer the technology free of charge to the AATF with an aim of supporting humanitarian aid projects.
“The slow growth in domestic rice production has been attributed to low yields being achieved by rice farmers in SSA,” said Dr Denis Kyetere, the Executive Director of AATF.
“Several factors are responsible for the low rice production. However, nitrogen deficiency and drought have been cited as leading constraints to upland rice production, while high salinity is increasingly becoming a major problem in many rice growing areas of Africa,” he continued.
Rice is an important staple food and a commodity of strategic significance across much of Africa. Driven by changing food preferences in the urban and rural areas and compounded by high population growth rates and rapid urbanisation, rice consumption in SSA has been growing by 6 percent per annum over the years, more than double the rate of population growth.
However, according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation, the area under rice production in SSA has stagnated at about 8 million hectares, producing about 14.5 million tonnes per year against an annual consumption of 21 million tonnes. These production and consumption trends imply a production deficit of about 6.5 million tonnes per year valued at US$ 1.7 billion that is imported annually. Insufficient rice production affects the wellbeing of over 20 million smallholder farmers in SSA who depend on rice as their main food.
“The license will enable the project to utilise our plant transformation technology for monocot species, PureIntro®, developing and deploying the nitrogen efficient, water efficient, and salt tolerant rice products, free of royalties,” said Mr Masamichi Terabatake, JT’s Chief Strategy Officer.
JT’s plant biotechnology is independently managed from its core businesses including its tobacco business and food business, and is not applied to its product development conducted within those businesses.
PureIntro is an agrobacterium-mediated plant transformation technology that is recognised worldwide as de facto standard for monocot transformation. The technology reduces development costs and time. PureIntro has been licensed by JT to more than 50 private and public entities worldwide for numerous monocots including maize, rice, wheat, barley, sorghum, sugarcane, switchgrass, miscanthus, forage and turf.
“The agreement will also allow AATF to sub-license the transformed materials to other public institutions working on the project. This will enable them to field test the materials in different ecologies in SSA,” Mr. Terabatake continued. The institutions will have the freedom to breed new rice varieties, using the transformed materials as the source of the desired traits.
The NEWEST Rice for Africa Project was launched by AATF in 2008. The initiative aims to transform some varieties of the New Rice for Africa (NERICA) to improve their productivity in nitrogen-poor soils, drought prone regions and in fields that have become excessively salty over time. The goal is to provide smallholder rice farmers with higher yielding varieties that are well adapted to the upland and lowland rice-growing areas in Africa.
Other partners in this private public partnership include Arcadia Biosciences who are providing access to traits that confer nitrogen use efficiency, water use efficiency and salt tolerance. The University of California is donating required plant transformation technologies. The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and the national agricultural research institutes of Burkina Faso, Ghana, Nigeria and Uganda will conduct the necessary field trials to test the performance of the new varieties. The project is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID), and will initially be implemented over a 10-year period.
The new varieties developed under the NEWEST Rice Project are anticipated to increase rice yields, improve food security and household income for up to 20 million smallholder farmers and their families in SSA and reduce Africa’s dependence upon imported rice.
The African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) is a not-for-profit organisation that facilitates and promotes public/private partnerships for the access and delivery of appropriate proprietary agricultural technologies for use by resource-poor smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa.
AATF currently works in ten countries in SSA and facilitates access and delivery of affordable agricultural technologies for use by smallholder farmers. Priority areas for the Foundation include addressing targeted agricultural constraints facing these farmers which include the impact of climate change on agriculture; pest management; soil management; nutrient enhancement in foods; improved breeding methods; and mechanisation. These are addressed through the access, development and deployment of accessible, transferable, adaptable and proven technologies.
In addition to the NEWEST Rice Project, other projects that AATF participates in include Striga control in maize, development of insect resistant cowpea, improvement of banana for resistance to banana bacterial wilt, biological control of aflatoxin, and drought tolerance and insect resistance in maize, for use by smallholder farmers in SSA.
