Slow Chinese Economy Could Be Negative for Agriculture

Beijing, May 26 (Prensa Latina) A top rural Chinese leader warned today that the show annual growth of the national economy, set at around seven percent, could limit creation of enough jobs to the country's rural population.

Tang Renjian, deputy director of the Central Group Office about Rural Work of the Communist Party, said the Government extended its support to national and service companies in those areas to compensate the loss of jobs, "but we do not know for how long this aid could be sustained."

Tang presented his opinions, which were published in the local press, during a forum held yesterday at the Chinese Agriculture Ministry, sponsored by the Center for Rural Economy Research.

The slowest economic growth, which is expected to be the new development pace in the country, would affect the progress of rural areas, said Tang, who considered that agricultural production could also face challenges, because the Government has stopped the increase of prices.

In this respect, he explained that inflation forced the authorities in Beijing to stop the increase in prices of all products, including agricultural produce, some thing he called a hindrance to the increase of farmers' income.

Tang said the Government needs to create a new protection mechanism for farmers and to encourage agricultural production.
