“We must be capable of finding a solution and send a message to all the actors in this drama, particularly the buyers, that we cannot benefit in the face of a moment of difficulty to continue to apply pressure on pricing”, said Le Foll, during a radio interview with France Inter.
The big distributers must “anticipate things and avoid aggravating the sector” added Le Foll, “so come September there is not continued pressure on the price”.
This announcement comes after egg farmers organised a campaign last week in an effort to have their demands met. At present, there is an overproduction of eggs, so producers are being paid 75 cents per kilograms of eggs, compared to the 95 cent cost price.
The protest has sparked much attention as the farmers opted last week to destroy 100,000 eggs per day, an equivalent to five percent of their production.
For the time being, the egg destruction is on hold.
“We need the public to help us to get across a certain message to some of our clients” said Yves-Marie Beaudet, the president of the egg sector of the producers union in Brittany.
“We have a big distributor that continues to keep prices low, without taking into consideration the cost of production for French eggs” added Beaudet.
He explained that one must factor in a cost of seven euros for every 100 eggs produced. However, “producers sell them at just under five euros”.
“We are surprised the state has discovered this problem…we needed at least 20 egg producers to throw their eggs in order for the Minister of Agriculture to take note of the problem” added Beaudet.
