The transformation in agriculture sector as proposed by the Malaysian government has shown positive achievements, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak.
He said the positive achievement was because the transformation or the rise in efforts taken to increase agriculture production was through innovation.
"Looking at the achievements in the agriculture sector in the third quarter this year, agro food sector has contributed RM6.7 billion to gross domestic product," he said during his speech at the launch of Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism show (MAHA International) and Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen National Day 2012, here today.
He said this proved that transformation in agriculture sector has happened and is happening. He said crop, livestock and fisheries subsectors have each registered positive growth, which are RM2.6 billion or 7.6 per cent, RM1.7 billion or 7.1 per cent and RM2.4 billion or 4.7 per cent, respectively.
"Meanwhile, the export value of food products for January to June 2012 period amounted to RM9.9 billion, an increase of 2.8 per cent compared with the same period last year," he said.
To ensure that the agriculture sector continued to progress, Najib said the government has, for the first time, made a huge allocation which amounted to RM5.8 billion in 2013 Budget.
He said the government realised the importance of the agriculture sector as well as the overall industry potential.
"The agriculture sector will continue to be driven to increase national income for agriculture projects such as oil palm, rubber, high-value herbs and paddy, besides ensuring a sustainable food security," he said.
To be held for 10 days from Nov 24 to Dec 2, the seventh edition of MAHA International is hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry and organised by Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute.
The exhibition is participated by 2,240 local companies including participations from 23 foreign countries. – Bernama
