A conference under the theme of ‘Making the Connection: Value Chains for Transforming Small holder Agriculture’ was held at the UNECA late last week.
The conference hosted by the ACP-EU, Technical Center for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation and the African Economic Commission was attended by delegates from various countries in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific.
The conference was organized to encourage action on the issue of value chain which has been a focus of discussion for a long time with the view of creating connections between resource constrained farmers and large corporations said Micheal Hailu, Director of the CTA.The conference focuses on the need to transform the small scale farmer as food demands increase around the world to ensure that the more than half a billion small hold farmers ultimately feeding the world are no longer threatened by food insecurity.
The role of large multi-national companies like Walmart in recognizing the value of small hold farmers in sustaining the several billion dollar food industry was discussed by a presentation given by Professor Emeritus David Hugh.
Many of the multi-nationals are becoming increasingly aware of the need to support and afford technological aid to small hold farmers for their own long term benefit according to the Professor.
Developed countries need to ensure fair market access to developing countries like Ethiopia according to Wondyrad Mandefro Ethiopian Minister for Agriculture.
