Welcome Young Farmers

By Denise Matthews
Franklin County is known for its agriculture and on June 15 and 16 the area will be flooded with farmers who plan to see for themselves what makes Franklin so fertile.

The Franklin County Young Farmers Association is this year’s host for the annual Georgia Young Farmers Association Summer Tour, and the F.C. Young Farmers have planned two days of fun, food and farming features for the anticipated 300 to 400 visitors.

“Franklin County is number two in the state in total agriculture produced,” Owen Thomason, Young Farmer advisor said. “It is important to us to showcase what we have going on.”

According to Thomason, Franklin has been number one, but Colquitt County is currently in the top spot due to its vegetable production.

There will be no lack of production on the part of the Franklin Young Farmers as they welcome their visitors on Friday with a picnic in the Lavonia City Park. The visitors will also have the chance to enjoy the new Land of Spirit production, Front Porch Stories, in an almost private viewing as the entire theatre has been purchased for the group for the evening. Thomason said there will be alternative entertainment at the American Legion for those not attending the play.
On Saturday, the group will meet at Tugaloo State Park where they will board buses to visit Transplant Nursery in Lavonia and then will split with one group going on a tour of historic Lavonia, a tour of the quilt trail and to see the community garden. The second group will have the opportunity to tour the canola oil plant in Bowersville and to visit the Fieldale Hatchery in Lavonia.

Everyone will end up. Thomason said, in downtown Lavonia to enjoy the antique shops, food tasting, the farmers market and have some fun with games for the kids.

A good time will be had by all that evening as they will all convene at Tugaloo Park once again for a meal, beach time, old-timey demonstrations and Putt Putt.

Thomason said the Franklin Young Farmers, which number 125 strong, have had a committee working on this event for a while and are anticipating a great time for everyone.

This is the first time the Summer Tour, which is rotated around the state, has been in Franklin and Thomason hopes it will be memorable for all.
The mission of the Franklin County Young Farmer Program is to provide educational instruction and opportunities to individuals engaged in the agricultural industry which will increase their proficiency in agricultural production, management, agribusiness and leadership.

The group meets the third Thursday of each month in an educational setting to provide information about innovative new topics, hands on demonstrations and networking opportunities for those individuals affiliated or having an interest in Franklin County’s largest industry.
