Rabi crop season: wheat to be cultivated over 16.5 million acres in Punjab

Over 16.5 million acres of land would be brought under wheat cultivation during Rabi crop season in wheat growing parts of Punjab. Sources in Agriculture department said on Friday that in order to attain the fixed target of wheat crop, department would provide full assistance and guidance to wheat growers.

Special attention will be accorded to bringing maximum land under wheat crop, and Agriculture department has initiated special training programme for wheat growers regarding use of fertilisers, natural cultivation techniques and irrigation. In Sialkot district, wheat would be cultivated over 5.10 lakh acres of land. The tehsil wise break-up of wheat cultivation in Daska is 1.16 lakh acres, 74000 acres in Sambrial, 1.67 lakh acres Pasrur and 1.52 lakh acres in Sialkot tehsils of the district.

Agriculture department would train 35,000 wheat growers of 1,442 villages of Sialkot district, wheras 45 agri experts would go village to village for training purposes. Special step has also been taken to check the sale of fake and substandard pesticides and fertilizer in Sialkot, Daska, Sambril and Pasrur tehsils of the district. Meanwhile, Sialkot district administration has adopted solid measures to ensure use of quality pesticides and fertilisers by the wheat growers, sources added.
