Dry weather condition: farmers advised to begin first irrigation of wheat crop

Keeping in view dry weather condition in most of irrigated agriculture plains in the country, farmers should schedule first irrigation plans to water the sowed wheat crop. The Met Office in its weather advisory said the normal first irrigation should take place within 25 days of wheat sowing. It said wheat farming was in progress in most of the irrigated areas.

"Farmers of irrigated areas should irrigate the crop as per requirement due to dry weather prevailing in most of the irrigated agricultural plains of the country. Normally, first irrigation is given 20-25 days after sowing," it added. Farmers are advised to cultivate winter vegetables in time so that existing soil moisture may fully be utilised to increase the crop yield. It said wheat cultivation in most of Barani areas of the country has completed.

"Wheat cultivation has been completed in most of the Barani areas of the country. Farmers of Barani areas are advised to remove weeds from the fields, so that the present soil moisture may fully be utilised," it said. It urged the farmers of wheat growing areas to sow their crops in time to get optimum yield. The best suitable time for wheat cultivation is between November 1 and November 20 every year, it said. Farmers of cotton crop areas are advised to prepare their field for coming Rabi crops and complete their sowing in time.

"Farmers of irrigated plains of Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are advised to complete sowing of wheat crop before December 15 to get maximum yield. In case of late sowing, the recommended varieties should be cultivated to minimise the loss in yield," it advised. Mostly cold and dry weather is expected in Punjab and Sindh in the next 10 days. Mainly cold and dry weather is expected in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, light rainfall (with light snowfall over the hills) is expected over few parts on November 25 and onwards.
