Taiwan's agriculture to combine high-tech, service sectors: minister

Taipei, Nov. 21 (CNA) Agriculture Minister Chen Bao-ji said Wednesday that the government is hoping to bring in the high-tech and service sectors to help develop the country's agricultural sector.

"Upgrading the competitiveness of agriculture will require the cooperation between various sectors," Chen said, noting the focus of agricultural development will expand beyond farming and agricultural products.

To grapple with climate change, the council will rehabilitate fallow land starting next year and use it to plant crops that substitute for grains and other items that are currently imported.

He stressed that the Council of Agriculture will encourage more young people to work in the agricultural sector, try to ensure stable incomes and enhance the sector's competitiveness.

On cross-strait trade, he advocated three principles, including that agricultural trade be complementary, with Taiwan importing raw materials and Chinese medicines from China and China importing high-end fishery products and processed food from Taiwan.

Agricultural investment should be based on the principle that it is mutually beneficial, Chen said, with Taiwan putting capital, technology, and management into China, while using its cheap raw materials and labor to serve as a springboard to the international market.

Also, cross-strait technology cooperation should be mutually beneficial, he said, noting that Taiwan leads China in tropical and sub-tropical agricultural technology and management, while China has an edge in genetic resources.
