President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has reminded Liberians that prioritizing agriculture is the most excellent way to becoming food secured. The Liberian leader emphasized the need for every Liberian to engage in farming which she said is crucial to national security.

Speaking during the weekend on her farm in Julijuah, Bomi County, during the harvest of her rice, President Sirleaf told Executive Mansion reporters that Liberians have the advantage of the soil to become food sufficient and believes that once Liberians prioritize agriculture, food security would be guaranteed.

She explained that it is important for all citizens of Liberia irrespective of their status or position in society to get involved in agriculture in order to feed themselves.

When asked as to what led her to establish a farm, President Sirleaf told reporters that she wants to encourage other Liberians both in the public and private sectors and the ordinary people to go back to the soil and grow more foods.

“I want to set the example for others to follow because it is important for Liberians to grow what they eat and eat what they grow,” the President said.

On the President's farm, there are varieties of food crops. Some of the food items include; rice, corns, pineapples, plantains, bananas, cassava, eddoes, potatoes, pepper and vegetables among others.

President Sirleaf proudly boasted to reporters that she does not buy rice and other food crops from people because she eats the rice from her backyard and the farm in her home town in Bomi County.
