Parties urged to bolster agriculture portfolio

Nationals' MP Terry Redman serves as the Agriculture and Food Minister, but also has the Forestry and Housing portfolios.

Newdegate farmer and former federation president Trevor de Landgrafft says it is an impossible task to adequately cover the agriculture portfolio while maintaining others.

He says it would be a huge boost to the industry to have a minister solely devoted to agriculture.

"It would be very difficult for any person to have such a diverse portfolio for agriculture, as well as holding a city-centric portfolio," he said.

"The distances and the people you need to see and the trade missions you need to go on would be very difficult to undertake.

"I think it's very important, it would indicate to the electorate just how serious that particular party took agriculture as an industry."
